Rest Stop
Words and Music By Anne Stott
Sittin' at the rest stop, waitin' on the black top, watchin' the world go by
Sun's beatin' on the tar, heatin' up our little car, and I'm wonderin' why
We've ended up here, now tomorrow this year, with our world at this pace
Highways and by-ways, flight paths and train tracks,
When was the first rest stop made?
I don't get it how progress can destruct
How lost I feel
At the rest stop
Is this what we call success? Logos paving grass? Highways handing out contracts?
Shrink wrapped disposable fast food plastic distraction on sale for the extra profit
Not the first million, not the second or trillion, but the million that buys
The sixth house, the tenth car, on some island afar
Just to visit once or twice
I don't get it how progress can destruct
How lost I feel
At the rest stop
Can papyrus grow all these tv's? Did the first fire build the concord?
Does the wheel spin radio activity? Or thunderstorms foreshadow endless wars?
I don't get it, how
I don't get it how progress can destruct
How lost I feel
At the rest stop
A mirror image across the great divide stares at us in defiant pride somehow more alluring than our side
Maybe the grass is greener, and that's why we're here, lookin' at more stuff to buy
I like my stuff, my guitar my sunglasses the car, but even the stuff I justify
Still can't be taken back, like some words that can't be,
Unspoken even if you try
I don't get it, how
I don't get it how progress can destruct
How lost I feel
At the rest stop
